Vehicle and home maintenance

car wash with soap suds

Before using water outside check the current water restrictions.

Cars, bikes and boats

  • Using a commercial car wash facility is a more environmentally sustainable practice than washing a car at home as they use little water and contaminated run-off goes through special settlement pits to sewer.
  • When using a commercial car wash, look for a 5-star water saver rating car wash.
  • If you do wash your car at home, try using a
  • waterless car wash product
  • a bucket to wash, only using the hose for final rinse
  • low flow hose or pressure cleaner
  • Wash your car, bike or boat on the lawn.

Paving and building maintenance

  • Sweep or use a pressure cleaner to wash hard surfaces. Hosing of any hard surfaces, like driveways is banned, except for health and safety reasons.
  • Clean windows and roofs with a trigger nozzle hose or pressure cleaner.

Pools and spas

Pools and spas use a huge amount of water, but if you are careful, you can reduce your water consumption while still enjoying your pool or spa.

  • To reduce evaporation, you could
    • use a pool cover or blanket
    • install a shade cloth or sail over your pool area
    • wall your pool with hedges or walls to protect from wind which will reduce evaporation.
  • Backwash only when necessary
  • Keep pool and filters clean to reduce frequency of filter backwashing.
  • keep an eye out for leaks and consult a professional to fix.
