Coffs Harbour Celebrates NAIDOC Week 2022
Published on 20 June 2022
In celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Coffs Council is once again getting involved with two events during NAIDOC Week (3-10 July 2022).
Council and the Yandaarra Aboriginal Advisory Committee will hosting the annual flag raising ceremony on Monday 4 July and will follow with the 23rd anniversary of the Yandaarra Aunty Grace Roberts Community Awards on Thursday 7 July.
The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week is “Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!” which is a rallying cry for systematic change regarding the issues that matter to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“NAIDOC Week invites all Australians to join in a movement for a better future for our Aboriginal brothers, sisters and youngsters,” said Lloyd Lynwood, Chair of Council’s Yandaarra Aboriginal Advisory Committee.
The Yandaarra Aunty Grace Roberts Community Awards are a key part of Coffs’ NAIDOC celebrations. They honour the talents and achievements of Aboriginal people in the local Gumbaynggirr community and acknowledge the hard work that happens to keep culture and community strong.
This year, over 20 nominees have been put forward across different categories such as Sports Achievement, Community Organisation and Business of the Year to name but a few.
The celebration will also feature live performances and entertainment from local First Nations peoples, including an item by Kulai Preschool who have been practising for weeks!
