Making It Easier to Access Our Beaches

The City of Coffs Harbour is planning improvements to beach access at five popular coastal locations between Arrawarra and Sawtell.

Many of the existing beach access structures have been in place for decades and are becoming increasingly difficult and costly to maintain. Through this project, the City is developing designs for new and improved access infrastructure that is safer, more durable and better suited to future coastal conditions.

The project will investigate the most appropriate solution for each location, which may include new stairs, boardwalks, viewing platforms, connecting pathways and improvements to surrounding public spaces.

By investing in resilient and sustainable coastal infrastructure, the City is helping ensure residents and visitors can continue to enjoy safe and reliable access to some of the region's most loved beaches.

Locations Included

The following locations are included in the design program:

Oceanview Headland, Arrawarra (North)
Investigation and design of a replacement beach access platform and associated infrastructure.

Oceanview Headland, Arrawarra (South)
Investigation and design of replacement beach access stairs.

Lakes Road, Woolgoolga
Assessment and design of improved beach access infrastructure.

Sandy Beach
Assessment and design of beach access improvements.

Murrays Beach, Sawtell
Investigation and design of replacement beach access stairs and associated access improvements.

What Will the Project Deliver?

The design phase will:

Assess each location's unique coastal and environmental conditions.
Determine the most suitable beach access solution for each site.
Improve safety and reliability for beach users.
Plan for future coastal change and erosion risks.
Explore opportunities to improve pathways and access connections.
Develop detailed designs ready for future construction.

This will then involve construction of the replacement beach access infrastructure.

Why aren't the same stairs being built at every location?

Each site has different coastal conditions, topography and environmental constraints. The design process will determine the most suitable access solution for each location, which may include stairs, platforms, boardwalks or a combination of structures.

Why is the project currently in the design phase?

Before construction can begin, the City must undertake detailed investigations to understand ground conditions, coastal processes and engineering requirements. This ensures future infrastructure is safe, durable and appropriate for its location.

Will access be improved during construction?

Any temporary impacts to access will be communicated to the community before construction begins. The City will work to minimise disruptions wherever possible.

When will construction begin?

This project is currently focused on developing detailed designs. Future construction timeframes will be considered once designs, approvals and funding arrangements are finalised.
