Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017 - 2021
The purpose of Council's Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017 - 2021 (DIAP) is to position access and inclusion at the centre of Council business. The DIAP has a vital role in ensuring access and inclusion are fundamental considerations in how we create liveable communities, support access to meaningful employment, provide information and services and promote positive community attitudes and behaviour.
The DIAP builds on work already underway to increase access and inclusion. It spans all areas of Council, building capacity in order to make Council, and ultimately the Coffs Harbour area, a welcoming place for all people. The DIAP supports the larger reform of the disability sector through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which aims to enhance positive change in the lives of people with a disability.

Disability Inclusion and Access Advisory Committee
The Coffs Harbour City Council Disability Inclusion and Access Advisory Committee works collaboratively with Coffs Harbour City Council in the development and implementation of strategies which aim to ensure that the local government area becomes an accessible community for all people.

Mobility Maps for the Coffs Harbour Jetty and CBD
Council's online mapping tool provides Mobility Maps for the Coffs Harbour Jetty (including Promenade) and CBD areas of the Coffs Harbour LGA.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new national scheme to support people with disability to achieve their goals, participate in their communities and to provide them, their families and carers with personalised, flexible care and support.
The NDIS became available on the Mid North Coast from July 2017. If you are a person with a disability and you meet the access requirements you can become a participant in the scheme. If you do not meet the criteria the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) may be able to provide you with information about other services that could be of benefit to you and assist in referral to these.
The NDIA is also working with local communities to improve inclusion of people with disability and build awareness of disability through fostering innovation, research and best practice.
The NDIS provides person-centered planning for participants and delivery of their support services. This is mostly achieved through Local Area Coordination services (LAC).
Mid Coast Communities are delivering the NDIS on the Mid North Coast and can be contacted on 02 6651 1788.
This scheme allows people with significant and permanent disabilities who always require a carer in order to participate in community activities to be able to participate without having to pay two admission prices or fees. Each state has their own version of this card and specific organisations which are involved. Full terms and conditions and application forms can be found on the NSW Companion Card website.

Disability and Aged Information Services Inc (DAISI) is a free service which aims to provide information on services and supports available to assist people with disabilities, aged people and their families, carers and advocates.
DAISI is based in Lismore and services the Far North Coast region from just north of Woolgoolga to Tweed Heads. For further information free call 1800 800 340 (within NSW).
The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 protects individuals across Australia from unfair treatment in many parts of public life. The Act makes disability discrimination unlawful and promotes equal rights, equal opportunity and equal access for people with disabilities. People who experience direct or indirect discrimination can complain to the Commission. Complaints must be made in writing or by email. Go to the lodge a complaint page for further details.
