14 April 2016 Help Build Coffs’ Reputation as an Events Destination

A new Draft Events Strategy designed to cement Coffs Harbour’s status as one of Australia’s premier event-friendly cities is going out for public comment from Wednesday April 20, 2016.

Last year, Coffs Harbour won a globally-acclaimed International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) World Festival and Event City Award, gaining recognition alongside major cities around the world.

“That award was fantastic recognition for the amazing work the community achieves by working together to attract and successfully run a huge range of major events and community festivals,” said Coffs Harbour Mayor Councillor Denise Knight.

“The partnership we have with the business - and wider – community, as well as our event partners has been critical to the success of the events we regularly host. This new strategy aims to build on that partnership to reinforce Coffs Harbour’s well-deserved reputation as the Mid North Coast’s regional event capital.”

Coffs Harbour hosts a widely diverse calendar of events. These range from the Kennards Hire Rally Australia plus major cricket, NRL, AFL, rugby, Touch, Oztag, running, swim and soccer tournaments, to the annual Buskers Festival, Woolgoolga Curryfest and the Multicultural Harmony Day Festival.

It is calculated that events like these alone pump around $30million annually into the local economy.

The Draft Coffs Harbour Events Strategy 2020 aims to:

·         Attract, grow and retain events in Coffs Harbour.

·         Generate economic, social and community benefits.

·         Provide expertise, frameworks and support for others to run successful events.

To reach that goal, five strategic focus areas have been identified:

·         Economic development.

·         Community development.

·         Coffs Coast brand and marketing.

·         Align Council strategies.

·         Sustainability.

The Draft Coffs Harbour Events Strategy 2020 will be on exhibition for 28 days from Wednesday, April 20 2016, until Tuesday, May 17 2016.

The documents can be viewed online, at Council’s Administration Building and local libraries. Details of how to make submissions can be found at those locations.
