7 December 2016 Coffs Partners with Swans for Pre-Season Clash

The Sydney Swans will return to Coffs Harbour next year to play North Melbourne as part of the AFL’s pre-season competition, the JLT Community Series.

The match is scheduled for Sunday, February 19 2017, at C.ex Coffs International Stadium and will also be broadcast live on Fox Sports.

It’s a welcome return to the Stadium for top-level AFL which was last seen here in 2015 when a crowd of over 4,000 watched Sydney take on the Brisbane Lions.

“That was a highly successful event and we’re thrilled to be able to welcome the Sydney Swans back to C.ex Coffs International Stadium, as well as – once again – hosting a pre-season fixture,” said Council’s Group Leader City Prosperity, Nikki Greenwood.

Daniel Heather, Council’ Section Leader Stadium and Major Events, said the versatile Stadium has proved to be a truly fantastic venue for AFL. “We hope that the Coffs Harbour community and broader AFL fan base across the north coast will come out and support this match,” he said.

Mr Heather said Council’s ongoing partnership with the Sydney Swans has greatly assisted Council in securing the highly sought-after event. “Our relationship with the Sydney Swans really helped us get over the line as the club has been very open about how much they value their time here in Coffs Harbour,” he added.

The Sydney Swans have also confirmed that they will again be running their pre-season camp in Coffs Harbour following their JLT Community Series match against the Kangaroos. On previous visits, the Swans have attended business breakfasts, school visits and clinics, as well as coaching clinics. The club is promising their supporters in Coffs Harbour and Northern NSW that they will again have several opportunities to meet and interact with the entire player and coaching group again in February.

Joseph La Posta, AFL NSW/ACT State Manager - Partnerships Diversity and Major Projects said: “We’re thrilled to welcome elite level AFL back to the Coffs Coast, and we couldn’t have asked for two better teams. This announcement is certain to provide a fantastic boost for the North Coast AFL Competition and a wonderful linkage to Council’s partnership with the Sydney Swans.”

Sydney Swans General Manager of Football, Tom Harley, said the Club enjoyed strong links to the Coffs Harbour community. “The Swans have always enjoyed a strong connection with the Coffs Harbour community and through our QBE Sydney Swans Coffs Harbour Academy, our pre-season training and community camps – and now another JLT Community Series match in the city – that connection only grows stronger,” he said.

“The facility at C.ex Coffs International Stadium is outstanding and the team has enjoyed spending an important part of their pre-season program utilising the Stadium during the camps over the last two seasons.  The JLT Community Series is an important part of our preparation for the 2017 season and we really look forward to taking on North Melbourne in front of a strong home crowd.”

Tickets will go on sale in early 2017.
