20 May 2015 Have a Yarn at the Library

Come and celebrate World Wide Knit in Public Day at the Harry Bailey Memorial Library in Coffs Harbour on Monday, June 15.

“The Library Service has marked World Wide Knit in Public day for several years. It began with a small group of knitters in 2008 to over 60 people coming along last year, including a bus load from the Domain Nursing Home,” said Enzo Accadia, Council’s Section Leader Community Programs.

“We’ve always seen it as a great opportunity to open up the library to people who share a passion.  In the past we have even had people joining in while on holidays. On one occasion, a local knitter was able to demonstrate stitches so that an English language pattern could be translated into Arabic.”

World Wide Knit in Public Day began in 2005. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company because knitting can be a solitary pastime.

Anyone interested in learning how to knit or crochet is welcome to join seasoned knitters at an informal morning tea who will be happy to show them the ropes.

The Library has also been involved with the ‘Wrap with Love’ project since 2008. ‘Wrap with Love’ is a voluntary organisation that distributes wraps - created by thousands of squares knitted by volunteers across Australia - across the globe to communities in need. Local knitters have made hundreds of blankets over the years.

On World Wide Knit in Public Day, the Library will also be displaying some of the many colourful wraps that have been created recently. Volunteers from Coffs Harbour, Toormina, Sawtell, Woolgoolga, Dorrigo and Nambucca have contributed their knitted squares to the project.

World Wide Knit in Public Day will be held at the Harry Bailey Memorial Library, on the corner of Coff and Duke Streets, at 10am on Monday, June 15. All are welcome and no bookings are necessary.
