From free pizza to building a small robot from scratch – the April school holidays are sorted at Coffs Harbour’s cultural HQ, Yarrila Place.

A swag of fun and creative events has been curated into a monster program which will ensure busy hands and engaged minds at Yarrila Arts and Museum, Harry Bailey Memorial Library and the branch libraries at Toormina and Woolgoolga.

The City of Coffs Harbour’s programs (for ages 5 to 18) will be complemented by Youth Week activities (ages 12 to 24) and are either free or offered at low cost.

“Young people will have the chance to build an animatronic animal – like a robot kangaroo – which they’ll get to keep after the session led by Emma Davies,” Mayor Nikki Williams said.

“Emma is one of the exhibiting artists in the exhibition Eco-symbiosis which opened at Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) on 5 April.”

A highlight event will be Paint, Pizza and Print Making on Tuesday 15 April.

The morning painting workshop will be led by First Nations artist Danielle Burford, while in the afternoon teens will learn how to print on a tote bag which they’ll get to keep.

Between these sessions will be a free pizza lunch (noon to 1 o’clock) which is open to all and not just those participating in the art making activities on the day.

“People can do some or all of the events on this day, which is being hosted by the YAM Young Creatives – so it’s youth shaping the activities for their peers,” City Planning and Communities Acting Director Ian Fitzgibbon said.

“Yarrila Place will be rocking on 15 April as we are expecting quite a crowd.”

Another featured event of the school holiday program will be the opportunity to create a ‘Crankie’ Story.

This session will be offered at the Harry Bailey Memorial and Toormina and Woolgoolga libraries where participants will design their ‘story’ on a long piece of paper which will be rolled up scroll-like and ‘played’ through a crank-driven picture box.

“Kids with interests outside of sport will find so many creative outlets in this extended school holiday program,” Mayor Williams said.
