Coffs Harbour City Councillor Rodger Pryce

I lived the first 23 years of my life in New Zealand, son of dairy farmers, in the North Island. This was a very hard existence, our family was very poor financially, but rich in love.

I developed an interest in animal genetics from a very early age, working for the New Zealand Dairy Board and then with American Breeders Services, the Worlds leader in animal genetics.

In 1973, aged 25, I was transferred to Australia by ABS to assist with the establishment of ABS in Australia. Based at Emerald Beach, I travelled extensively throughout the Eastern States, aided by the pastoral house, Elders IXL LTD. I then accepted a position with Elders as NSW Senior Rural Property Salesperson, responsible for the marketing and sale of signature rural properties and to cater for the requirements of corporate entities, as well as State and Federal governments.

In 1980 I returned with my family to Coffs Harbour, opening the first real-estate-only office for Elders, which I purchased in 1985. In 1991, I established the brand NSW Real Estate, selling the business to my daughter and son in law in 2003.

During the latter part of my property career, I became involved in projects, including the establishment of Toormina Gardens, Linden Avenue and lastly, Coles in Coffs Harbour.

Both my daughters live in Coffs Harbour and both have followed my interest in property. They were schooled at Sandy Beach Primary and attended Woolgoolga High School.

In past years I have been President of the Coffs Harbour Pony Club, been involved with the Tourism Association, served as the business community representative on the Coffs Council’s Strategic Planning Committee, as well as being a member of Coffs City Rotary and NSW Farmers.

In 2008, we purchased 400 hectares at Brooklana, adjoining the Dorrigo National Park, comprising approx 200 hectares of pasture and 200 hectares of rainforest.

Brooklana Angus Stud has been established on the property, we breed high-end genetics, currently owning the most valuable bull and cow of the breed, which is the largest numerically in Australasia, totalling around 110,000 registrations annually.

Apart from my Council interests, I am 1 of 4 cattle producers on the Australasian committee responsible for the selection of young Angus sires entering into the Australian Sire Benchmarking Programme.

My other interests have included golf, fishing, squash, tennis and family.
