What Council's Doing

Morgans Road Farm

Morgans Road FarmCouncil owns a property near Woolgoolga that uses reclaimed water (treated sewage) to grow hydroponic tomatoes, bananas and bush tucker crops.

The property is called Morgans Road Farm and it was established in 2000 to trial different crops and demonstrate to farmers the benefits of using reclaimed water.

Morgans Road Farm is proving to be very successful with several growers setting up their own profitable business on the property. Bush food crops include local indigenous species such as aniseed myrtle that is being harvested for it's valuable oil content and riberry harvested for the juice from the fruit.

Morgan's Road Reclaimed Water ReservoirMorgans Road Farm involves partnerships between Council, NSW Agriculture, Southern Cross University and local growers.

Former Coffs Harbour City Council Mayor, Jenny Bonfield, and the founder of Clean Up Australia, Ian Kiernan opened the five megalitre reclaimed water reservoir located on Morgans Road Farm in August 2003.

The reservoir is a distribution point, maintaining supply and pressure to local irrigators and also acts as a storage facility for reclaimed water during rainfall periods when irrigation demand eases off. Twenty agricultural properties in the Sandy Beach hinterland area are connected to the reservoir.

The Morgan's Road Farm and Council's recycled water program was featured extensively on the ABC's Landline program on 11 February 2007.
