Impounding

Coffs Harbour City Council is the local impounding authority under the Companion Animals Act 1998 and therefore may impound dogs and cats under certain circumstances.

The following description outlines what will happen if your animal has been impounded.

If you animal is identifiable i.e., microchipped or have a tag with a name, address or phone number then you will receive written notice that your animal has been impounded at the Council Pound located at the RSPCA Shelter on Dowsett Drive, Coffs Harbour.

This facility is open 7 days a week excluding public holidays from 10.00am - 3.30pm and Tuesdays 9.00am - 11.00am only and can be contacted on (02) 66513311.

It will cost you $70.00 to release your pet if collected within 48 hours of impounding.  This cost increases by $10.00 each day thereafter. Additional fees and charges apply for dogs and cats which are not microchipped or currently lifetime registered with Council.

Animals with an identifiable owner will be kept for a maximum of 14 days and unidentified animals will be kept for only 7 days.

Council's current policy is that all efforts will be made to return the animal to its owner prior to impounding if the animal is microchipped and has a current registration. The return of the animal will be to the owner in person or an appointed agent only.
