About the Resource Recovery Facility
What is a Resource Recovery Facility?
The Coffs Coast Resource Recovery Facility became fully operational in January 2008. The plant processes mixed waste and organics waste into a range of high-grade composts and soil enhancers. It also turns mixed waste into a mulch for use in the agricultural industry and separates out any residual recyclable materials.
Objectives
One of the main aims of this project is to recover beneficial products from 80 per cent of wastes currently landfilled and ultimately eliminate the need for landfill by 2020.
Other objectives include:
- to process a maximum of mixed waste and source separated wastes creating products of value (this will include the extraction and utilisation of methane gas produced in the existing landfill),
- to achieve highest resource value in transforming waste to potential resources,
- to protect the environment during the full life cycle of construction and operation of the waste processing plant,
- to reduce and ultimately extinguish all environmental impacts experienced in any continuing landfill operations,
- to achieve the above environment objectives in a way that is economically viable and socially responsible.
