What Council's Doing

NSW Rest Area Locations

When driving, you should take a break at least every two hours, or whenever you feel uncomfortable or drowsy. You should do this in a town, at a service centre, café or at a Roadside Rest Area where it is safe to pull over and rest until you're refreshed.

Rest areas

Rest areas are places where you can park safely, get out of your car and refresh yourself before continuing your journey.  Rest areas are available 24 hours a day, all year round and are clearly signposted.

Service centres, petrol stations, parks and country towns are other places you can stop and take a break from driving.

Driver Reviver stops

During peak holiday travel periods, such as Christmas, Easter and holiday long weekends, almost 100 Community Driver Reviver Sites operate throughout NSW. They are an ideal place to take a break during a long journey. They offer a free biscuit, a cup of Bushells Tea or a coffee. Local volunteers are on hand to offer advice about road conditions, places of interest and places to stay.

Driver Reviver stops only operate during peak holiday times and on long weekends. If there are no Driver Reviver stops operating, be sure to stop somewhere else such as a rest area.

For more information, visit the Road Safety section of the RTA website.

Stay fresh on the South Coast

If you're heading south of Sydney for the holidays, take a look at this initiative which aims to reduce fatigue related crashes on the Princes Highway. The project is called Stay Fresh on the Princes Highway, and it looks to help motorists recognise the early signs of driver fatigue as well as understand the risks and consequences of driving while fatigued.

Driver fatigue early warning signs include yawning, tired or sore eyes, slow reactions, making fewer and larger steering corrections, missing road signs and having difficulty in staying in the lane. The project is about educating drivers and their passengers to recognise the signs of fatigue and to encourage them to utilise Driver Reviver stops along the Highway.

Use this brochure to plan your trip ahead if you're driving south soon.
