Road Safety Teaching Aids
"Stop. Look. Listen."

These are the fundamental principles for staying safe as a pedestrian around Coffs Harbour's busy road system.
They also frame the basic message of an innovative new teaching aid package launched in Coffs Harbour in August 2003 to assist people with intellectual disabilities to develop road safety skills.
The photograph-based guides show typical pedestrian scenarios around Coffs Harbour, with the models taking the correct 'road-safe' action.

The teaching packs include photo cards, CDs and brochures designed as a resource which carers can use to help people with specific needs to develop vital life skills. The program was developed jointly by Coffs Harbour City Council and Coffs Harbour Support Services. It was funded by the NSW Motor Accidents Authority.
Road Safety Videos/DVDs
In February 2004, the NRMA gave Council a grant to add a video/DVD to the teaching materials. As with all the other resources, they feature service users crossing roads in Coffs Harbour. Each protrays typical traffic facilities such as roundabouts, traffic lights and shared zones and gives guidelines on dealing with traffic safely.
