What Council's Doing

Council's Involvement in Road Safety

Coffs Harbour City Council is committed to making our roads safe and reducing the incidence and severity of road trauma.

  • Road crashes are a huge cause of human trauma.
  • Since record keeping commenced in 1925, over 169, 000 people have died on the roads in Australia.
  • Crashes cost about $15 billion per annum (1996 data).
  • From 1970 until 2002 the number of deaths per 100,000 people dropped from 30.4 to 8.8. This reduction has been achieved in spite of a huge increase in motor vehicle use.
  • From 1970 to 2002, the fatality rate per 10,000 registered vehicles has dropped from 8.0 to 1.4.
  • In terms of 100 million vehicle-kilometres travelled, the fatality rate has dropped from 4.4 in 1970 to 1.0 in 2000.

Road Safety involves everyone in the community whether we are motorists, pedestrians or cyclists. It is up to everyone in the community to become involved in road safety.

Coffs Harbour City Council is involved in a number of road safety initiatives including:

  • Road Safety Education
Council undertakes many different types of road safety education projects. One of the most recent was the production of road safety teaching aids for people with intellectual disabilities.
  • Pedestrian Safety
Council commissioned a pedestrian observation program on the Pacific Highway (between Harbour Drive and Vernon Street) in April 2003 in a bid to improve pedestrian safety in this busy late night entertainment strip.
  • Promoting alternative means of transport
Council is working with the local Bicycle Users Group to improve and promote cycleways throughout the city.
