29 October 2009 - Corindi Skate Park Upgrade Begins

Work has begun on the upgrade of the skate park at Corindi.

A budget of $200,000 is to be spent on the improvements, which are being funded through Section 94 (or Developer) Contributions, collected from developments in the Corindi area.

"The focus of all the improvements we're currently putting into place in Corindi has always been on providing what the community wants," said Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Keith Rhoades.

"The community made it clear what they wanted the money spent on and the new skate park is just one of a list of facilities that we're currently building or improving for the people of Corindi," he said.

The contractors for the skate park project, Convic, developed the design through consultation with local youth. It will cater for skaters at the beginner and intermediate levels and incorporates a 'street' section with rails, low walls and ramps, as well as a bowl.

A graffiti art wall at the site will have to be removed to build the new skate park, but a replacement wall will be built in the same area. Some old casuarina trees will also be taken away, but they will be replaced with new species that are better suited to the location.

As part of the overall improvements to the village, construction of a shared path/cycleway around the perimeter is currently ongoing and plans are in place to begin the renovation of Niland Park.

The community has identified six top priority items, which are - completion of the shared path/cycleway around Corindi village, the upgrade of the skate park, improvements to the community hall, provision of a neighbourhood park/playground, upgrade of tennis court and shed and improvements to the sportsground.

Council has worked closely with the NSW Land and Property Management  Authority (formerly the Department of Lands) as part of the process to provide the new facilities at Corindi.

Weather permitting, the project is expected to take around four weeks and be completed by December 2009.
