24 Nov 08 - It's All About Him!
Up-to-the-minute political satire and the cult of celebrity are all targets of 'The Narcissist' - La Boite Theatre Company's most successful play to date - which takes to the Jetty Memorial Theatre stage on December 2-5.
"'The Narcissist' is a deliciously scandalous comedy with a satirical st
ing in its tail. Think Oscar Wilde meets Little Miss Sunshine," said Theatre Manager Sharna St Leon.
Xavier is an ALP spin-doctor. He lives in New Farm and is a single gay man staring down the barrel of middle age. The party has decided to recapture the religious vote and has charged him with the task of finding a fundamentalist Christian candidate in the Federal seat of Meninga.
Bronwyn is an interior design columnist with the Sunday Mail. She's been single for so long she's forgotten what romance is. She challenges Xavier to a duel. It's time to bag a husband by fair means or foul.
Enter Satchel and Jesse. Satchel is the third-time winner of Brisbane's prestigious 'Most Eligible Barista' Award. He's also in the final 256 contenders for Big Brother 8. He's half Bronwyn's age.
Jesse used to be an artist. Now he's a corporate lawyer. He also used to be Xavier's boyfriend. Now he's back. Just one hitch. He's getting hitched to Y'landah, a homophobic litigation lawyer, with Tourette's Syndrome and a morbid fear of the colour brown.
"Every character in this play is a narcissist. They embody the superficial and self-obsessed cultures they live and work in. It is all about them!" said Ms St Leon.
"It's a pretty dark and damning talebut wrapped in enough silliness and slapstick to keep the bus-full of giggling high school students in a packed audience amused throughout. Which is really the whole point." - The Australian Stage.
