20 Nov 08 - Cavanbah Centre Design Competition
The new Cavanbah Centre is nearing completion and the community is being invited to take part in a competition to create a unique name sign for the $2.4m building.
"The Cavanbah Centre is a true community building - it is located in the heart of the community, it will be used by the whole community and it is the result of community calls for a multi-purpose centre," said Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Keith Rhoades.
"So it is particularly fitting that we should go back to the community for its ideas on a unique sign for this landmark building," he said.
The winning designer will receive a prize of $1,500 and the chance to work with Alison Page, the artist and designer who is best known for her regular appearances on ABC's 'New Inventors' programme. Ms Page is familiar with the Cavanbah Centre project having already created designs for a number of the internal fittings.
The sign will be sited prominently on the front façade of the Harbour Drive building.
The submitted designs should be unique and of a concept that reflects the Centre's 'place' - Coffs Harbour, the site and its people. Anyone submitting a design should also consider the building's use and its environment.
Each design must incorporate the building's name - Cavanbah Centre, the street number - 191 - and any other motif which enhances the overall design.
Anyone interested in submitting a design can take part in a site visit to the Centre on Monday, November 24, at 3.30pm to meet with the contractor to discuss the construction and siting of the winning design.
The competition will be judged by the Mayor, Councillor Keith Rhoades, the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bill Palmer, Alison Page, Rebecca Fullarton, a Project Manager with GeoLink, Jenni Eakins, Council's Cavanbah Centre Project Manager, Robert Smallwood, Acting Head Teacher in Arts and Media with North Coast TAFE and Malcolm McLeod, Council's Cultural Development Officer.
Entries can be submitted as scaled drawings, photomontages, 3D animations, 3D models or photographs. All competitors must reside in the Coffs Harbour local government area.
The competition closes on Thursday December 11 at 4pm and entries should be posted to the Cultural Development Officer, Coffs Harbour City Council, Locked Bag 155, Coffs Harbour 2450. For more information, contact Malcolm McLeod on 6648 4840.
