10 Nov 08 - Vision 2030 Arts Competition Winners Announced

The winners of the 'Vision 2030' Creative Arts competitions were presented with a total of $1,900 in prize money at a special ceremony in the Palms Shopping Centre on Monday November 10.

2030 prize winnersFollowing the presentations, the winning entries are to be displayed on the stage area outside the 'Big W' store until November 21.

"The imagination and vision that these artists and writers displayed are a real inspiration and I would urge the community to come along to the display and see how these talented people view their ideal future," said Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bill Palmer, who presented the prizes.

The competitions were part of the first stage of the 'Coffs Harbour 2030' project that will see the community lead the way in planning the future of our area. The ultimate aim is to establish a blueprint on which the area's future economic, transport, housing, lifestyle and environmental goals will be founded.

Stage One of the process is the creation of a long-term vision for the community, by the community - 'Vision 2030'. The 'Vision 2030' document is currently being drafted after receiving community input from a community-wide survey, a series of workshops, the creative arts competitions and a telephone poll. The draft 'Vision 2030' is expected to be on public exhibition for comment from December 2008 to January 2009.

The next stage will produce 'Coffs Harbour 2030': a plan outlining the steps needed to be taken to realise the goals set by the community in 'Vision 2030'.

The aim of the arts competitions was to explore what people value about Coffs Harbour and how they would like to see our area in the future - illustrated through visual arts, photography and writing.

The themes for each category were:

  • Visual Arts (2D and 3D): "How I would like to see Coffs Harbour in the future"
  • Photography: "What I value about Coffs Harbour now"
  • Short Story/Poetry Schools Competition: "How I want my town to be in the year 2030"

A total of 86 entries were received across all three categories. Each category had a top prize of $150 and runners-up prizes of $50.
