Pump Stations & Reservoirs

Pump Stations

Coffs Harbour, Coramba and Nana Glen water supplies have 9 water pump stations. The major pump stations are Cochranes Pool Intake Pump Station and Karangi Dam Pump Station.

Cochranes Pool Pump Station is situated on the Orara River and has a capacity of 34.5 megalitres per day (410 litres per second), with one pump operating or 61 megalitres per day (710 litres per second) with two pumps operating. Pumping from Cochranes Pool is directed to Karangi Dam, but if necessary water can be pumped directly to Red Hill Balance Tanks (Reservoirs).

Karangi Dam Pump Station has 3 pumps. Capacity is 40 Megalitres per day (460 litres per second) with one pump operating or 60 Megalitres per day (690 litres per second) with two pumps operating. A standby generator was installed at the Karangi Dam Pump Station in 1999 as part of the Y2K contingency plans. This generator is now a permanent fixture, capable of running Karangi Dam Pump Station in times of prolonged power outages, providing a secure supply of water to all Coffs Harbour residents.

Reservoirs

Coffs Harbour, Coramba and Nana Glen water supplies have 20 reservoirs in total. The combined capacity of all the reservoirs is 84 megalitres. The reservoirs range in size from 0.45 megalitres to 20 megalitres capacity. 16 are constructed of concrete the remainder are constructed of steel

The oldest reservoir is Red Hill Reservoir, which was constructed in 1951, with a capacity of 5.7 Megalitres. The most recently constructed reservoir is Roberts Hill Reservoir which was constructed in 1995, with a capacity of 20 Megalitres.

All the reservoirs in the Coffs Harbour, Coramba and Nana Glen water supplies are roofed to protect the water from any contamination. The reservoirs are also cleaned regularly by contract divers, who use a vacuum system, to allow the reservoirs to stay on line during the cleaning operation. Along with regular mains flushing, cleaning of the reservoirs helps to maintain a clean water supply.
