21 Sept 2007 - New Bridge Name Proposed

The name 'Bangalor Bridge' has been proposed for the new bridge over Coffs Creek built as part of the Hogbin Drive Extension.

"There has been a tremendous response to the naming of the bridge," said Coffs Harbour Mayor Councillor Keith Rhoades. 

"The proposed name is very appropriate and one that I think will be welcomed by the Aboriginal community. I am sure it will also be accepted by the wider Coffs Harbour community too," he said. 

'Bangalor' is a reference to the Bagawa name for Coffs Creek - Bangalor Creek - which refers to the landscape and honours the ancient Elders.  

A total of 174 submissions on a name for the bridge were received by Council during the public consultation period from May 23 until June 19. A working party subsequently worked through the submissions and proposed the name - 'Bangalor Bridge'. 

Agreement on the preferred name has still to be sought from the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), as the road is classed as a main road and the RTA is ultimately responsible for naming. 

The bridge over Coffs Creek was built as part of the Hogbin Drive Extension. It is 130 metres long and consists of two lanes with a cycle/walkway on the eastern side. 

The bridge was designed to minimise impacts on the surrounding areas. Lighting will be restricted on the bridge to reduce light pollution, which can affect the annual muttonbird migration. The design has been kept low profile and is colour sympathetic to the local environment. The Coffs Creek cycle/walkway track has also been accommodated beneath the bridge on either side of the creek. 

It was completed in July 2007 and work is now continuing on the approaches to the bridge.
