7 Mar 2007 - Acting Legend Becomes Theatre Patron
International screen star Jack Thompson has agreed to become the Patron of the Jetty Memorial Theatre.
Speaking last night at the launch of the inaugural subscription season for the Theatre and the announcement of his patronage, Mr Thompson said that "the little flame of live theatre is what's alive in a community".
"What we have now in the Coffs Harbour of today is the beginning of something I know will grow into the cultural heart of the city," he said. The actor, a keen supporter of young talent, predicted that: "What's going to be said by the young people of this city, will be said on the stage."
He went on to praise the forthcoming season, pointing out that having the opportunity to see professional theatre will be a way for young performers to learn by example.
"Council was extremely pleased that Jack accepted our invitation to become Patron of the Theatre," said Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Keith Rhoades.
"Not only does he bring with him his reputation as an outstanding and internationally acclaimed actor, but he also comes with a huge amount of support and enthusiasm for the encouragement of young talent in the performing arts."
Council's General Manager, Stephen Sawtell, added: "I am sure that both the Theatre and all those who perform here in the future will benefit very positively from Jack's involvement."
In another first, theatre-goers will now have the opportunity to enjoy this season of contemporary Australian and international theatre at a discount.
Anyone who buys tickets for four of the professional shows on offer in this year's schedule will receive a 15% discount. Subscribing will also allow people to change their bookings without incurring any fees.
"A series of award-winning theatre companies and performers have all been lined up to provide an outstanding season that covers a huge range of talent from cabaret and comedy through to music, drama and children's shows," said Theatre Manager Sharna St Leon.
"The programme of ten shows ranges from popular children's shows through new comedy, classic and contemporary drama to musical theatre. This inaugural subscription programme truly has something for every member of the community. This is the first of what will be an annual season of the best that professional theatre can offer, brought to the Coffs Harbour community by the Jetty Theatre," she said.
Details of all the season's shows and the subscription offer are available in a specially produced programme now available from the Jetty Memorial Theatre.
