Dogs Declared Dangerous

Important information on Restricted Breeds and Dangerous Dogs for owners

The NSW Companion Animals Act (1998) was updated in early 2006. Amendments were made to the Act in relation to Dangerous and Restricted Breed Dogs. It is important for all dog owners to be aware of your new responsibilities under the Act.

Who is affected?

There are new requirements you need to adhere to if:

  • you have one of the following dog breeds (including cross breeds):
    • American pit bull terrier or pit bull terrier
    • Japanese tosa
    • dogo Argentino
    • fila Brasileiro
      (photos and breed information for above breeds)
    • Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canario (as per Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956),
  • or any other dog of a breed, kind or description prescribed by the (Companion Animals) regulations, 
  • or if your dog has been declared by Council under the Act to be a restricted dog.

Penalty Provisions 

An owner of a Restricted Breed or Dangerous Dog who does not comply with any of the requirements of this section is guilty of an offence. An on the spot infringement of $1,320 may be imposed or court proceedings where a maximum penalty of $16,500 may apply.
