11 July 2006 - ‘Academic Ashes’ Test Match Comes to Coffs
Coffs Harbour is yet again playing host to a test match when Australia's Rugby League University team square up to Great Britain on Sunday, 16 July, at the International Stadium.
"This is the second Rugby League University Test we've seen played in the city. The first was back in 2003 when Australia beat the Poms 34-8," said Councillor Ian Ovens, Chairman of Council's City Business Units Committee. "So this is their chance to try and get their revenge," he said.
Many students who have taken part in this test series have gone on to become top players. They include 2006 Queensland State of Origin player Adam Mogg as well as Qantas Wallabies legend Lote Tuqiri during his League career.
"The game on Sunday is the second of a three-match series," said Australian University Rugby League CEO Mike Loftus. "This is the only one being held outside of a capital city and is testament to the excellent relationship we have with Coffs Harbour City Council and its staff. We couldn't have done this without their support," he said.
Gates open at the International Stadium at 12noon on Sunday, 16 July. The game will begin at 1pm. Entry is free.
"We planned the game for Sunday to avoid interfering with the local Group 2 First Grade clash between the Coffs Harbour Comets and Macksville on Saturday," said Ben Payne, Manager of Council's Sports Unit.
"So this is a great chance to see some really exciting international and local rugby league action on the Coffs Coast this weekend," he said.
The Australia squad includes James Sullivan, Glen Osborn, Dave Llewellyn, Chris Todd, Luke Garnett, Stu Anderson, Kevin Till, Dennis Pugh, Matt Jackson, Jimmy Giblin, Matt Carbutt, Mark McKinley, Adam Scott, Ben Rawlings, Matt Mulholland, James Morrow, Nick Walker, Lloyd O'Connor, Tom Tsang, Ian Gordon, John Nichols, Stu Dunbar, Richie Hawkyard, Gareth Thirsk and Gary Peacham.
The Great Britain side is Jamen McLeod, Mohammed Alhaje, Paul Kelly, Dave Touua, Phil Thurgood, Gavin Duncan, John Ducat, Shane Wooden, Dan Smith, Shaun Davison, Joe Christie, Shane Beldham, Clint Lovering, Nigel Craig, James Tronc, Sean Storie, Chris Maccoll and Kurt McPherson.
Coffs Harbour is hoping to hold the University Rugby League World Cup in 2008 which would bring some 12-14 countries for a two-week celebration of Rugby League to the city.
