13 Apr 2006 - Council Welcomes Black Spot Funding for Coffs Roads

Today's announcement that the Australian Government has allocated $1.19 million for the upgrade of three major road black spots in Coffs Harbour has been welcomed by Coffs Harbour City Council.

The funds were allocated under the AusLink Black Spot Programme, and will be used to upgrade three black spots on Sawtell Road, Coramba Road and Bucca Road, which were identified by local road authorities.

Black spots are generally sections of roadway which are prone to vehicle accidents and the aim of the funding is to improve road safety in these areas.

"I am very pleased with this announcement. We will now be able to upgrade these known black spots and make our local roads safer," said Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Keith Rhoades.

"Mr Hartsuyker has worked hard in support of our application and to help secure the funding from the Australian Government and I thank him for his continued efforts."

The upgrade works will include curve reconstruction and delineation east of Wirrabilla Drive on Sawtell Road (190,000), and partial curve reconstruction and shoulder widening on both Coramba Road ($600,000) and Bucca Road ($400,000).

"Council already spends a large proportion of its annual budget on the repair and upgrade of local roads, but considering our limited resources, Commonwealth funding such as this and the $5 million allocated for the Hogbin Drive extension is much-needed and appreciated," said Cr Rhoades.
