What can you do to make a difference?

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), is the most important thing we can do to help stop global warming and climate change.

The following are the top 10 things you can do to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions:

1. Be Energy Wise - turn off lights when you leave the room and don't use appliances unnecessarily (e.g. you don't need the radio and the TV on at the same time).
2. Change your light globes - compact fluorescent light globes easily replace old incandescent globes reducing energy usage. They not only use less energy, they also last longer.
3. Take shorter showers - 4 minute showers are the optimum for reducing energy and water usage.
4. Wash clothes in cold water - you will reduce your greenhouse gas emsissions and save on your electricity bill!
5. Walk or ride your bike when going short distances (or long distances if you can) - instead of going in the car.
6. Plant local native trees - they soak up carbon dioxde and provide native animals with a place to go, protecting biodiversity!
7. Buy local - food and other goods! The closer they are to your home the less distance they travel, reducing transport emissions, plus think how much fresher the food will be... try the Growers' Market.
8. Reuse - reusing items means that the energy to create new items is removed.
9. Recycle - recycling uses less energy than making products from scratch.
10. Buy Green Energy (or encourage your family to) - green energy comes from renewable sources, such as solar or wind power, which does not produce any carbon dioxide!
