WELS
WELS Scheme sticker showing water efficiency rating

The Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme in an initiative of the Australian Federal Government which allows you to compare the official water efficiency rating of different products for inside the house, such as washing machines, toilets, etc.

By providing a guide to consumers on how much water a product they are considering purchasing may use, a water efficiency rating system is a tool which allows consumers to reduce their water consumption and save money on water and energy bills - and help contribute to environmentally friendly communities.

The now defunct A rating stickerMost Australians would have seen the old "A" rating system for products which use water - with the most efficient products having the most "A"s. To bring the "A" water rating system into line with the energy rating system (those red stars on the yellow energy label of your fridge/washing machine/dryer), the Commonwealth Government of Australia introduced a replacement with the new WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling Standards) Scheme on 1 July, 2006.

Now those products most efficient at using water will be the ones displaying the most blue stars. The WELS Scheme applies to products for indoor use, including:

  • Plumbing products (showers, tap equipment and flow controllers);
  • Sanitary ware (toilet and urinal equipment); and
  • White goods (clothes and dish washing machines).
