2 Sept 08 - DVD Giveaways for Parents at Libraries
First-time parents should head to their local library this week as special DVDs are being given away on behalf of the 'Let's Read' programme.
The promotion is part of the activities being held during National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2008, which is running until September 7.
The DVD on offer to first-time parents gives them ideas on how to read to their young child in an age-appropriate and enjoyable way.
Any family attending a Library's Storytime session during National Literacy and Numeracy Week at Woolgoolga, Toormina or Coffs Harbour will receive a copy of the 'Let's Read' DVD to take home.
'Let's Read' is an early literacy programme for 0-5 year olds developed by the Centre for Community Child Health in partnership with the Smith Family.
The aim of the programme is to encourage parents to read to their children every day from birth.
Reading to babies helps encourage brain development and the growth of language skills.
"Reading aloud with your young child develops the skills that are needed when he or she starts school," said Library Programmes Officer Judy Atkinson.
"It's lots of fun and you can share some special time together."
Storytime sessions are held at:
- Woolgoolga Library - Tuesdays from 11am-11.30am;
- Coffs Harbour Library - Wednesdays from 11am-11.30am; and
- Toormina Library - Thursdays from 11am-11.30am.
The full range of 'Let's Read' material is also available to borrow from the library.
