Arsenic and Old Lace |
18-27 July 2008 Evenings: Matinees:
|
Presented by CHATS Productions A madcap black farce by Joseph Kesselring revolving around Mortimer Brewster, a theatre-hating drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in Brooklyn, New York, as he debates whether to go through with a honeymoon with the woman he loves and has recently agreed to marry. His family includes two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine and "just a pinch" of cyanide; a brother who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster home (which then serve as graves for the aunts' victims); and a murderous brother who has received plastic surgery performed by an alcoholic accomplice. |
Possum Magic - The Musical
|
18-19 August 2008 18 August - 6.30pm |
Based on Mem Fox's classic picture book with illustrations by Julie Vivas, the stage production of Possum Magic has been stylishly embellished into a rollicking Australian musical. Since the world premiere season in 1990, it has become the most successful Australian musical for children ever produced for the stage. Possum Magic is the tender tale of baby possum Hush, made invisible by Grandma Poss in an effort to keep her safe from snakes. The adventure begins when Grandma is unable to reverse the "bush magic" spell and both she and Hush set off across Australia to try to find the solution. A work full of imagination, charm and humour, Possum Magic features larger than life-size puppets, original music and a cast of multi-talented performers. Tickets will vanish like Bush Magic! TicketsAdult $20 Buy your tickets online (click above), or from the Jetty Theatre Box Office, in person or by phone on 6652 8088 between 10am and 4pm Monday-Friday. |
Codgers
|
28-30 August 2008 28 August: 8pm
"Don Reid's witty and gentle play gives so much laughter and a few tears - it must be seen by all and sundry."
|
Riverside Productions and Steady Lads present Don Reid's Codgers. Cogers everyone either knows one, is related to one, lives with one - or is one! This new Australian comedy is based on seniority, reminiscence, health and fitness, and sundry other significant matters. Eavesdrop on six senior Aussie men, some of them mates since war service, as they sweat it out together each week in a gym and are taken on inter-connected journeys that are challenging, touching and very funny. When secrets, differences and loss of trust threaten to destroy the long-established friendships, they learn that 'difference' is more a matter of point of view; that 'you wouldn't be dead for quids' and, no matter what, that you just gotta laugh! Wayne Harrison directs a stellar cast of Australia's favourite senior actors, including Ronald Falk, Ron Haddrick, Jon Lam and Henri Szeps.

The Pitch
|
9-10 October 2008 9 October: 8pm
"A hysterical spoof on screenwriting stuffed full of running gags, one liners and great physical comedy." |
Critical Stages presents The Pitch by Peter Houghton. The Pitch is a hilarious satire about the trials and tribulations of trying to crack the big time in Hollywood. Peter Houghton's brilliant show was critically acclaimed and a huge hit in Melbourne in 2006 and 2007 and was awarded two prestigious Green Room Awards for performance and for best new play. The Pitch is set in the very humble apartment of aspiring screenwriter Walter Weinerman just before he is about to sell his screenplay to an all-powerful Hollywood film industry panel. We watch as Walter desperately practices pitching his film concept. Peter Houghton's The Pitch is one hilarious antidote for the many clichéd and overdone Hollywood blockbusters that we are all familiar with.

The Narcissist
|
2-5 December 2008 2 December: 8pm
"One of the most vibrant new Australian comedies to be staged in years." The Australian |
La Boite Theatre presents Stephen Carleton's The Narcissist. A deliciously scandalous comedy with a satirical sting in its tail - think Oscar Wilde meets Little Miss Sunshine - The Narcissist promises a naughty night of raucous laughter and very, very bad behaviour. Xavier is a narcissist. He is a jaded, single, urban professional for whom middle age looms, and the prospects of finding a psychosexually well-adjusted partner are beginning to fade. Enter Bronwyn, an equally committed boozy malcontent and his best friend who challenges Xavier to a duel - "Six weeks to bag a man!" The gloves are off - whoever scores first, wins! Sex, Politics & Religion - It's all about Me! The Narcissist is a riotous and politically incorrect post-modern comedy of manners infused with the joy of popular culture. Cast includes Jonathan Brand, Sandro Colarelli, Judy Hainsworth, Andrea Moor & James Stewart.
